If your vehicle is showing steering wheel shakes or vibrates at highway speeds, here are the most likely causes and the parts you'll need to fix each one.
The most common cause of highway-speed vibration. If a tire loses a balancing weight, wears unevenly, or a wheel gets bent from a pothole, the rotating mass becomes unbalanced, causing a rhythmic shake that peaks at specific speeds.
If wheels were recently removed, the lug nuts may not have been torqued correctly, or rust/debris on the hub prevented the wheel from seating perfectly flat. This causes the wheel to wobble at speed.
Tie rods connect the steering rack to the wheels. When the joints wear out and develop excessive play, the front wheels can flutter or shimmy left and right at higher speeds.
Worn suspension bushings or ball joints allow the entire control arm to shift under load. This dynamic alignment change leads to steering wheel vibration and poor, wandering handling.
