Tie rod ends connect the steering rack to the wheel knuckles. Over time, the ball-and-socket joints wear out, creating a dead zone or slack before the wheels actually respond to your steering input.
The internal gears of the steering rack can wear down over high mileage, or the rubber bushings holding the rack to the frame can degrade. This allows the entire assembly to shift when you turn the wheel, causing a loose feeling.
