If your vehicle is showing car feels like it is choking or gasping for air when pressing the gas pedal, here are the most likely causes and the parts you'll need to fix each one.
A severely dirty or blocked air filter physically restricts the amount of air the engine can pull in. When you press the gas pedal demanding more power, the engine literally chokes for air.
The MAF sensor measures incoming air to determine how much fuel to inject. If it is dirty or failing, it miscalculates the air/fuel mixture, causing the engine to bog down or hesitate. This is frequently caused by over-oiling aftermarket reusable air filters or forgetting to plug the sensor back in after an air filter check.
A cracked intake boot or disconnected vacuum hose allows unmeasured air into the engine, creating a lean mixture. This causes the engine to stumble and gasp when accelerating. Hoses are often accidentally knocked loose during recent under-hood maintenance.
Carbon buildup around the throttle plate restricts initial airflow. When you first press the gas pedal, the disrupted airflow causes a momentary choking or stumbling sensation before the engine catches up.
If the engine gets plenty of air but the fuel system cannot deliver enough fuel to match the demand, the resulting lean condition feels exactly like the engine is gasping or falling flat on its face.

If the exhaust system is blocked, the engine cannot push out spent exhaust gases. Because an engine is essentially an air pump, if it cannot exhale, it cannot inhale fresh air, leading to a severe choking feeling, especially at higher speeds.
