If your vehicle is showing tires chirping, skipping, or hopping during tight turns, here are the most likely causes and the parts you'll need to fix each one.
Driving a part-time 4WD vehicle on dry pavement forces the front and rear axles to turn at the same speed, causing driveline bind and tire skipping in tight turns. If the switch is in 2WD, the transfer case motor or actuator may be stuck engaged.
The clutch packs inside a limited-slip rear differential can stick together if the gear oil is degraded or if the required friction modifier additive was left out during a recent fluid change. This forces the inside and outside rear tires to turn at the same speed, causing a chirp.
If the front wheels are severely out of alignment, their turning radiuses will fight each other (poor Ackermann geometry), causing the front tires to drag or skip. This is highly common if steering parts were recently replaced without a follow-up alignment.
A worn or failing constant velocity (CV) joint on the front axle can physically bind up when the steering wheel is turned to full lock. Instead of flexing smoothly, it catches and releases, causing a hopping sensation.
In all-wheel-drive vehicles, a failed center differential or seized viscous coupling will permanently lock the front and rear driveshafts together. This creates severe driveline wind-up and tire hopping during low-speed parking maneuvers.
