If your vehicle is showing sluggish acceleration or feeling like the car has lost its passing power, here are the most likely causes and the parts you'll need to fix each one.
A severely clogged air filter or a dirty Mass Air Flow sensor prevents the engine from calculating the correct air-fuel mixture, especially under hard acceleration. This often occurs if the MAF sensor is accidentally left unplugged after checking the air filter.
Spark plugs and coils degrade over time, leading to weak sparks that fail to ignite the fuel mixture properly under the heavy load of passing. Incorrectly gapped plugs or loose coil connectors during a recent tune-up can also cause this hesitation.
When you demand passing power, the engine needs maximum fuel delivery. A weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter will starve the engine of fuel, causing it to fall flat or hesitate during acceleration.
As a catalytic converter degrades or melts internally, it creates a severe exhaust restriction. The engine essentially chokes on its own exhaust, causing a dramatic and noticeable loss of power at higher speeds and RPMs.
The VVT system adjusts engine timing to provide extra power at higher RPMs. If the VVT solenoid is failing or clogged due to dirty engine oil, the engine won't 'wake up' and provide the expected surge of passing power.
