Over time, body oils, dirt, and spills accumulate on the seatbelt webbing, making it stiff and less pliable. This stiffness causes the belt to fold over itself and twist as it passes through the narrow guide slot.
The seatbelt webbing was accidentally twisted behind the plastic trim panel, either during a recent interior repair or by being pulled out to the absolute limit and retracting folded. This creates a permanent twist that constantly jams.
The internal clock spring inside the seatbelt retractor mechanism loses tension over years of use. Without enough pulling force to keep the belt taut, slack develops and allows the belt to fold and jam in the slot.
Physical wear, cuts, or fraying on the edges of the seatbelt webbing cause it to catch on the plastic guide loop (D-ring). As it catches, the belt is forced to twist and bunch up.
