Using fuel with a lower octane rating than your engine requires, or excessive carbon buildup in the cylinders, can cause the air-fuel mixture to ignite prematurely.
Spark plugs that are worn out or have the wrong heat range installed can create hot spots in the combustion chamber, leading to premature ignition (pinging).
The knock sensor detects engine pinging and tells the computer to retard the ignition timing. If it fails, the engine cannot correct the timing to stop the knock.
Too much air or not enough fuel makes the combustion burn hotter and faster, causing detonation. This is often due to a vacuum leak, a dirty MAF sensor, or weak fuel delivery.
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve lowers combustion temperatures. If it gets clogged or fails to open, cylinder temperatures rise and cause pinging under load.
