If your vehicle is showing key is physically hard to turn or stuck in the off position, here are the most likely causes and the parts you'll need to fix each one.
When a vehicle is parked with the wheels turned against a curb or on an incline, the steering column lock binds tightly against the ignition cylinder. Turning the steering wheel slightly in the direction it has 'give' relieves this pressure and allows the key to turn.
Over time, the internal pins (tumblers) in the lock cylinder or the physical key itself wear down from friction. This prevents the pins from aligning properly, physically blocking the cylinder from turning.
Dirt, pocket lint, or dried-out factory grease can jam the delicate tumblers inside the lock. Applying a specialized lock lubricant can free up the sticking components and restore smooth operation.
The electrical switch located behind the lock cylinder can mechanically bind or melt internally due to high electrical loads. This physical resistance transfers to the key, making it hard to turn.
If the vehicle doesn't register that the automatic transmission is fully in Park, a safety cable or solenoid will lock the ignition cylinder. This prevents the key from turning to the start position or being removed.
