The cross-shaped joints on the driveshaft wear out and lose their needle bearings over time. This creates a physical gap that causes a noticeable clunk and slack feeling when power is first applied.
Rubber mounts secure the powertrain to the chassis. When they tear or collapse, the entire engine or transmission twists excessively before transferring power to the wheels, feeling like drivetrain slop.
Common on front-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles, worn inner CV joints develop excessive internal play. This results in a hesitation or clunking sensation when accelerating from a stop.
