If your vehicle is showing engine runs noticeably hotter than normal alongside oil warnings, here are the most likely causes and the parts you'll need to fix each one.
The engine is severely low on oil, which reduces lubrication and triggers the oil warning. Because oil provides a significant amount of engine cooling, the increased friction causes the engine to run noticeably hotter. This is frequently caused by a loose drain plug or double-gasketed oil filter after a recent oil change.
A major coolant leak or cooling system failure causes the engine to overheat first. The extreme heat thins the engine oil so much that the oil pump cannot maintain pressure, triggering the oil warning light as a secondary symptom.
A failed head gasket allows coolant and oil to mix, or allows combustion gases to pressurize the cooling system. This leads to a loss of both fluids' effectiveness, causing simultaneous overheating and a drop in oil pressure.
If equipped, a failed oil cooler prevents the engine oil from shedding heat into the cooling system. This causes the oil to overheat and thin out (dropping pressure) while simultaneously transferring excess heat to the engine block.
The oil pump is failing to circulate oil properly. The lack of lubrication immediately triggers the oil warning and creates massive internal friction, which rapidly overheats the engine.
