Rust builds up underneath the ABS tone ring on the axle, causing the ring to crack and expand. This creates an irregular gap that tricks the ABS system into thinking the wheel is locking up at low speeds.
Rust builds up under the wheel speed sensor mounting point, lifting it slightly away from the tone ring. This increases the air gap and causes a weak signal, usually triggering false ABS right before a complete stop.
If a new sensor was recently installed but the mounting hole wasn't thoroughly cleaned of rust, the sensor won't seat fully. The resulting incorrect air gap causes false ABS activation.
